RESOLUTION of the International Scientific Conference “Biologically Active Compounds: From Chemistry to Medicine”
Tashkent, 7–9 October 2026
On 7–9 October 2026, the International Scientific Conference “Biologically Active Compounds: From Chemistry to Medicine” was held in Tashkent to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the S. Yunusov Institute of the Chemistry of Plant Substances, Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the antiarrhythmic drug Allapinin into clinical practice. The Conference brought together the XVI International Symposium on the Chemistry of Natural Compounds and the II China–Central Asia Academic Conference on Disease and Health.
The Conference was attended by researchers, clinicians, academics and representatives of the pharmaceutical industry from more than 15 countries. According to the programme, 98 plenary and oral presentations and 103 poster presentations were delivered; the book of abstracts contained 248 contributions. The scientific programme encompassed the chemistry of natural and synthetic compounds, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical technology and clinical medicine.
Participants acknowledged the high scientific standard of the Conference, the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and the need to establish an integrated drug development pipeline, extending from the discovery and structural characterisation of natural compounds, their rational chemical modification and the identification of molecular targets to preclinical and clinical investigations, pharmaceutical formulation development and industrial implementation.
Particular attention was devoted to alkaloids, including diterpenoid alkaloids, flavonoids, polyphenols, terpenoids, natural peptides and microbial metabolites; modern synthetic methods and biocatalysis, including the preparation of nucleoside analogues. The prospects for developing antiviral, anticancer, antibacterial, cardioprotective and neuroprotective agents, as well as for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, stroke, cardiac arrhythmias, neurodegenerative disorders and other diseases of major public health significance, were discussed. Advances in regenerative medicine, targeted drug delivery, nanotechnology and personalised pharmacotherapy were also highlighted.
Presentations on Allapinin, its derivatives and novel antiarrhythmic compounds demonstrated the practical significance of the national school of alkaloid chemistry and opportunities for further advances in cardiovascular pharmacology. The importance of artificial intelligence, virtual screening, molecular modelling, advanced spectroscopic and chromatographic methods, metabolomics and bioinformatics in the development of drug candidates was emphasised.
Of particular interest were presentations by Sh. Sh. Sagdullaev on diterpenoid alkaloids and drug development; Sh. I. Salikhov on antiviral polyphenols; S. O. Bachurin on compounds for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders; A. V. Kuchin on the chemical modification of natural substances; M. M. Asatullaev on stroke; S. M. Deev on targeted anticancer therapy; and Weiliang Zhu on artificial intelligence in drug discovery. Presentations by Musabaev, N. U. Zakirov, Salakhutdinov, Sara Westarp, A. Efimenko, S. Gelperina, K. Chaprov, M. S. Yunusov, A. Baev, A. V. Rogov, V. M. Yunusov, K. P. Cheremnykh and other participants were also noted. Discussions of Allapinin, Aksaritmin and lappaconitine derivatives, regenerative medicine and advanced pharmaceutical technologies were considered particularly significant.
The Conference contributed to strengthening international scientific cooperation. Cooperation agreements were signed with the Scientific and Production Centre “Phytochemistry” JSC (Kazakhstan), the Department of Chemistry at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Germany), and the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (China). The cooperation agreement with the N. N. Vorozhtsov Institute of Organic Chemistry, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Russia), was renewed.
Following the discussions, the Conference participants adopted the following resolutions:
1. To recognise interdisciplinary research on natural and synthetic biologically active compounds aimed at developing effective and safe medicines as a priority and to promote scientific, institutional and financial support for such research.
2. To advance an integrated scientific and technological drug development pipeline by strengthening collaboration among chemists, biologists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, clinicians, pharmaceutical technologists and industry, and by expanding studies of mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, safety and evidence-based efficacy of drug candidates.
3. To identify as promising areas for collaborative research circulatory diseases pharmacology, including novel antiarrhythmic agents and lappaconitine derivatives, as well as antiviral and anticancer therapies, neurodegenerative disorders, regenerative medicine and advanced drug delivery systems.
4. To accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence, computer-aided drug design, molecular modelling, metabolomics and advanced analytical technologies; and to promote research into natural metabolites, biotechnological processes and the biocatalytic synthesis of modified nucleosides.
5. To expand international scientific and technological cooperation through joint research projects, competitive grants, publications, academic exchanges and shared access to research infrastructure, and to facilitate the implementation of concluded agreements and the establishment of new partnerships.
6. To give particular attention to the training of early-career researchers, the organisation of research placements and scientific schools, and the participation of young scientists in international interdisciplinary research teams.
7. To strengthen the integration of research, clinical practice and pharmaceutical manufacturing; to improve technologies and standards for active pharmaceutical ingredients and dosage forms; and to facilitate technology transfer and practical implementation of research outcomes.
8. To continue organizing international scientific conferences on the chemistry and biology of natural compounds, and to plan the XVII International Symposium on the Chemistry of Natural Compounds for 2028 in the People’s Republic of China.
9. To publish information on the outcomes of the Conference in the journal Chemistry of Natural Compounds and on the organisers’ official information platforms.
The Resolution was adopted by all participants. 9 October 2026
